MANILA — Former Olympian Charly Suarez is going all out in his upcoming WBO Jr lightweight eliminator against Andres Cortes on September 20 in Arizona under TOP Rank Promotions.
Charly, 36 years old and undefeated 17-0, says he is in the best shape of his life and hopes to achieve his dream of becoming a world champion. His opponent is also undefeated at 22-0.
Charly and coach Delfin Boholst trained extensively in Batangas and will be leaving for the USA on Saturday to finish up training there.
“Iiyak ang kalaban,” said Coach Delfin. “Tinatanggap ko ang suntok ni Charly araw-araw kaya alam ko ang lakas niya.”
Charly is unfazed by his opponents’ record and says this is the most important step towards becoming a world champion while remaining undefeated.
“Ito na ang hinihintay ko and team ko. Kung manalo dito iyong world championship is maliwanag na po… Sa ngayon, sa edad ko, huwag isipin ang edad, tuloy ang passion. Kung paano sinimulan mo ganoon ka rin magtapos,” said Charly.
Suarez was a member of the PH National Boxing team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He is extremely proud of our boxers’ performances at the Paris Games and believes one day the Philippines will have an Olympic gold in boxing.
Suarez says he will not waste the confidence of people who are supporting him like business manager Arnold Vegafria and Chavit Singson.
